Marine Culvert Installation by Commercial Divers

What is Culvert Laying & Installation?

Culvert laying and installation is a core marine construction activity for KCC, encompassing the supply, positioning, and commissioning of concrete, HDPE, GRP, and steel culverts in marine and coastal environments. KCC has delivered culvert installation works for power station cooling water systems, stormwater outfalls, seawater intake structures, and inter-tidal drainage schemes across Hong Kong.

Works are planned and executed from barge or pontoon platforms where land access is restricted. KCC's divers guide culvert sections into position on the seabed, align them to the specified gradient and bearing, and connect joints using mechanical couplings, rubber ring joints, or in-situ concrete collars as specified. For large-diameter culverts, KCC coordinates with marine crane barges for lift and lower operations, with divers providing underwater guidance and joint make-up. Trench preparation, bedding, and haunch concrete placement are carried out to the specified standard. Post-installation CCTV inspection and dimensional survey confirm alignment and joint integrity before backfill and reinstatement.

Compliance: Works are conducted under SSBA to IMCA and HSE standards. Marine operations are planned in accordance with Hong Kong Port Operations and Marine Department requirements.

What's Included

  • Culvert supply coordination — concrete, HDPE, GRP, and steel pipe culverts
  • Barge and pontoon mobilisation for marine culvert installation
  • Seabed trench preparation and bedding layer placement
  • Culvert lowering, positioning, and alignment by commercial divers
  • Joint make-up — rubber ring, mechanical coupling, or in-situ concrete collar
  • Haunch and surround concrete placement
  • Post-installation CCTV inspection and dimensional survey
  • Backfill and seabed reinstatement
  • Works conducted under SSBA to IMCA and HSE standards

Why This Matters

Culverts are critical infrastructure for power stations, drainage schemes, and coastal developments. Correct installation — precise alignment, watertight joints, and proper bedding — determines the long-term hydraulic performance and structural integrity of the system. KCC's combination of marine construction capability and commercial diving expertise means culvert installation can be carried out safely and accurately in tidal, submerged, and restricted-access locations where conventional plant cannot operate.
