Pre-Works Archaeological Assessment — Protecting Submerged Heritage

What is Pre-Works Archaeological Assessment?

Before marine construction works commence, KCC carries out diver-based archaeological assessments of the proposed works area to identify and record any submerged heritage assets. Pre-works assessment is increasingly required by regulators and clients as part of the environmental and heritage management process.

What's Included

  • Desk-based review of known archaeological records for the works area
  • Diver survey of seabed and sub-bottom features within the works footprint
  • Recording of any identified heritage assets by photography, video, and measured survey
  • Formal pre-works archaeological assessment report
  • Recommendations for heritage management during construction

Why This Matters

Submerged archaeological assets — including historic wrecks, artefacts, and structural remains — can be present in any marine works area. Pre-works assessment protects both the heritage asset and the contractor from regulatory and reputational risk.
