Rubble Mound Survey — Assessing Armour Stone Stability

What is Rubble Mound & Armour Stone Survey?

KCC carries out diver surveys of rubble mound revetments and armour stone structures to assess stability, identify displaced stones, and detect void formation beneath the armour layer. Results are used to plan maintenance and identify areas requiring reinstatement.

What's Included

  • Systematic diver inspection of armour stone layer
  • Identification of displaced, overturned, or missing armour stones
  • Probing to detect voids beneath the armour layer
  • Measurement of armour layer profile and comparison against design
  • Formal report with condition assessment and reinstatement recommendations

Why This Matters

Displaced armour stones leave the underlying filter layer and core exposed to wave attack — leading to progressive erosion and eventual failure of the revetment. Regular surveys allow displacement to be identified and stones reinstated before the situation deteriorates.
